Just as your child has several well-child visits to the pediatrician as an infant, getting your child comfortable with coming to the dentist starts early and allows us to employ preventive methods and facilitate a future free from decay. By having your child visit Dr. Jim and Dr. Andrew at Children’s Dental Center of New Hampshire before s/he turns one, you have the opportunity to meet the doctors and staff in a relaxed, non-emergency related situation.

This infant exam is quite different than when you visit your dentist. We understand that as the child’s caregiver, you play a large role in his/her health. That’s why your child remains in your lap, facing you and then Dr. Andrew or Dr. Jim places your child’s head on his knees. They will examine your child’s mouth including the teeth, gums, and soft tissues, with simply a mirror. As pediatric dentists, Dr. Jim and Dr. Andrew will check for proper oral and facial development as well as detecting early tooth decay. While a crying child may be stressful, take comfort in the fact that is eases the assessment process because the mouth is wide open. Just as important as the exam, the doctors will discuss issues relating to your child’s oral health. These topics may include:

  • Fluoride exposure
  • Dietary counseling
  • Bottle/Sippy cup usage
  • Finger/Pacifier habits
  • Teething
  • Injury prevention
  • Home hygiene practices
